Why download TV? Why not!?
Just before 9 tonight, I double checked that Dirty Sexy Money was still on CTV at 10pm this evening, like it has been since the premier.
Turns out it was on at 7 and I missed it. I can’t even figure out why - I know baseball is doing its best to ruin TV right now, but baseball doesn’t air on CTV, and I’m pretty sure that Dirty Sexy Money isn’t actually simulcast with its US counterpart (for some reason they decided to air their programming on different nights than the US).
Not only does this happen with baseball (and probably other sporting events), but also American Idol loves to take over TV - it seems to be on 2-3 night a week for 1-2 hours each night. In the States, it would just wreck Fox’s schedule, but up here it wrecks our two most popular major networks. This is due to the fact that 99% of Global’s programming simulcasts with Fox, so Global is forced to run reruns because American Idol takes over and the new ones aren’t licensed up here without them running on Fox too. Then American Idol runs on CTV - both are pretty much shut down (unless you love American Idol, which apparently everyone does aside from me). This gets people out of the habit of sitting down to watch the programs on the odd occasion that they do play in their “regular” time slots.
As someone who works in the ad industry, I know how worried everyone is about PVRs and downloading - people will zap through the ads (or not even have to worry about them at all if it’s downloaded). That means lower ratings on the part of the stations, and that’s bad news for everyone else involved. Less people watching means less exposure means less awareness/sales.
But really, you make it so hard for me to watch the few programs that I make a point of watching every week - you’re punishing your loyal viewers!
Now excuse me while I go download Dirty Sexy Money and watch it - ad-free.
